Next: Bear’s Paw

According to Jinny Beyer’s book, this block has several names besides Bear’s Paw: Premium Star (published by Nancy Cabot in the Chicago Tribune May 5, 1953), Bear’s Tracks, Bear’s Foot, Bear’s Paw, Cross and Crown, Duck’s Foot in the Mud, Goose Tracks, Hand of Friendship, Lily Design, Path of Thorns (Nancy Page in the Birmingham News August 6, 1935), Cat’s Paw (different shadings – Nancy Page the Birmingham News May 29, 1934), and Illinois Turkey Track (Mrs. Danner’s Fourth Quilt Book, 1958). I’m sure there are others, depending on color choices and shadings. I just gave up on listing them here!

There is an interesting article “Bear’s Paw or Duck’s Foot in the Mud” which tells a little bit about how it came to be. Enough history. On to the fabric choices and cutting.

Here are the fabrics all nicely cut. As you can see, we have more half square triangles! Aaaargh! I’m thinking there are easier ways to piece this block! But I’m doing this by the book. (By the way, the white is my beloved Fairy Frost this time. We’ll see how it goes.)
Quilt on, quilting friends.
